It is summer, here on the Front Range, and you know what that means — it is incredibly hot outside. Bobbing back and forth between the mid 80’s and mid 90’s, it can be unbearable to be outside. While the simple solution might seem like cranking the air conditioner and taking refuge inside, doing so can be costly. So how can you cool off your apartments in Fort Collins without paying the price?
As an apartment community located in Fort Collins, just a few blocks from Colorado State University, we have had some experience dealing with the summer heat. Because of that, we thought we might tell you a few of our favorite tips and tricks to beat the summer heat that doesn’t involve cranking the air conditioner.
Mind Your Windows
When most people are looking for a way to cool off their apartment, they think to open the window. Well, we hate to break it to you, but it is pretty hot outside so that might not work out in your favor. Instead, consider keeping your windows closed during the day, and open them up at night once it has cooled off outside.
In addition to keeping your windows shut, it is also important for you to keep the blinds drawn during the hottest parts of the day. In doing so, you can block the passive solar heat from entering your apartment and making it warm and muggy. In fact, if your blinds are thick enough, they can block as much as 30% of the passive solar heat that could be warming up your apartment — and while we are unsure of how that translates into degrees Fahrenheit, we are willing to guess that it will be a noticeable difference.
Use Fans Wisely
When you are not trying to blast your air conditioner, fans will become your best friend. When most people go to the store to pick out a fan, they look for the largest fan possible so that they can sit in front of it until the sun goes down. While a large fan might seem like the best option, a handful of smaller fans is actually more efficient.
When your apartment begins to feel hot and muggy, it is usually because there is little to no airflow. When you have one large fan, it only pushes air in one direction — towards you. When you place a handful of smaller fans throughout your apartment, the air will be able to move around constantly, creating a cooling effect.
Hit The Pool
One of the best ways to beat the summer heat is to spend some time at the pool. With the water temperature being much cooler than the air, jumping in can cool you off quickly and keep you cool as you dry.
The only problem is that you can only take this advice if your local apartments in Fort Collins have a pool to use. Luckily, all of our residents, here at the Landmark Apartments, have access to a beautiful saltwater pool.
